Vinyl, PVC or resin: choosing the material for a designer figure

A sculpt that looks decisive in CAD turns ambiguous the moment someone asks the production question: vinyl, PVC or resin? The character does not change, but weight in the hand, edge crispness, how deep a colour sits, and what the unit costs — all of it moves with the material. Choosing well is less about the material ladder and more about matching three properties to three facts about the product.

Match the silhouette first

Round, chunky characters want vinyl. Rotocast vinyl is hollow, so a large figure stays light and cheap to ship, and the material’s natural softness flatters rounded forms. Spiky, thin, intricate characters want PVC: it holds crisp edges, thin walls and small accessories that vinyl would blur or break. Resin forgives nothing and hides nothing — it reproduces the sculpt exactly, which is why hand-finished limited editions use it, and why it never appears in mass-market runs.

The fastest test: draw the character’s silhouette as one black line. If the line is thick and curved, lean vinyl. If it has hairline gaps, spines or lace-thin parts, lean PVC. If the whole point of the product is a small number of perfect copies, resin.

Match the colour plan second

Material decides how paint behaves. Vinyl takes soft gradients and matte-satin finishes beautifully — the airbrushed cheek-blush look lives there. PVC holds printed detail and hard colour boundaries, which suits graphics and logos on the figure. Resin lets paint sit deep and glossy, the layered finish that photographs like jewellery. A brand planning metallics, translucents or glow parts should raise the question at the sculpt stage, because those finishes constrain material and tooling choices rather than the other way round.

Match the price band last

The material sets the unit-cost floor before a single figure is painted. Vinyl at volume is the cheapest per unit of the three; PVC sits above it, buying detail; resin sits far above, buying handwork. Blind-box economics punish heavy materials, which is why series with secret editions overwhelmingly use vinyl or hollow PVC — the case price has to absorb the rare figures that sell at series price.

One decision, three conversations

Material choice is not a line item to be picked late; it touches tooling, paint line, packaging weight and the whole series price structure. We put it in the first conversation, alongside the sculpt and the run size. If you are planning a designer figure and want the material question settled properly, the OEM/ODM page shows how we run development, or bring the character to us and we will talk through all three materials against your silhouette.
