What is an electronic badge? The screen badge remaking the ita bag
The badge — the round pin at the heart of anime merch culture — has been a printed object for decades: tin, lithograph, glitter epoxy, a character face you pin to a bag and never change. The electronic badge changes the object itself. A display replaces the print. The face animates. And a badge becomes, quietly, a device. Fans call them screen badges or digital pins; in Chinese fan communities the category is already named — 电子吧唧 — and it is spreading through ita bag culture faster than any merch format in years.
Same shape, different species
An electronic badge keeps everything that makes a badge a badge: the round form factor, the pin-back, the wear-it-on-the-bag culture, the collection mindset. What changes is underneath. Instead of a printed image sealed in tin, the face is rendered on a round display — typically a colour TFT behind a protective window — driven by a small processor, powered by a rechargeable cell. The badge becomes a tiny computer whose content happens to be your favourite character.
What the screen unlocks
The printed badge shows one face forever. The screen badge shows many: character expressions that animate, idle motion that makes the face feel awake, glow effects for dark venues, and — where the product supports it — faces you choose from an app, seasons you swap, or event-limited content. For collectors this reframes the badge from an object into a platform: one badge, many characters; one ita bag, a centre piece that changes with the collection around it.
Why ita bags took to it first
The ita bag — the transparent-windowed bag displaying a grid of badges — has always had a hierarchy: the centre spot matters most. A badge that moves and glows claims that centre naturally. The rest of the grid stays printed; the centre becomes electronic. This is why the first wave of screen badge adopters is deep in ita bag culture rather than gadget culture — the device earns its place inside an existing ritual rather than asking for a new one.
The craft underneath
Making an electronic badge is badge craft plus device craft. The badge side keeps the old disciplines: metal back, pin mechanism, edge finishing, printing for any static elements. The device side adds the new ones: round display selection, protective window optical design, battery and charging in a centimetre-scale shell, firmware that animates at low power. A factory that does only printing cannot make one; a factory that does only electronics will get the badge culture wrong. The products that feel right come from workshops that hold both crafts at once.
We manufacture electronic badges — tin craft, round displays, firmware and the fan-culture details — as an OEM/ODM line. The OEM/ODM page describes how we work, or write to us with your character licence and we will talk screens, pins and ita bags.
